It seems like only yesterday I was picking my daughters up from school on their last day and here we are at the start of a new school year. I wanted to introduce myself as I have the honor of being president of the CMA for the upcoming year. I am a working mother of two girls ages 8 and 6 who attend Boston public schools. I have been living in Charlestown since 2000 and my husband was born and raised here. Our girls take part in various sports and activities in Charlestown and can be seen playing at the local parks on a regular basis.
I joined the CMA when I was pregnant with my first daughter Abigail and was thrilled to have a forum to ask questions of other local moms or moms-to-be. I still remember my first CMA New Moms Breakfast and I am still friends with many of the women who attended that breakfast. I loved and still love going to Moms Night Out and enjoying all the events the CMA offered. A couple of years after having my kids, I volunteered to help run CMA’s Spring Egg Hunt, which I have done for the past 4 years. My husband and I both volunteer for Charlestown, as well as other organizations, all with the same mission to make Charlestown (our home) a better place for our girls. I am proud to call Charlestown my home and am proud to support our Charlestown neighborhood, along with our Board of Directors and countless volunteers who work tirelessly on the many programs and activities that serve Charlestown throughout the year. Thanks to the generosity of our membership and sponsors, the CMA has been able to support our Charlestown community and over 1300 families in our membership for almost two decades. Thank you for your continued support of the CMA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The CMA is run exclusively by unpaid volunteers dedicated to strengthening the community bonds in our neighborhood. Even within just our one square mile of Charlestown, we stand as one of the largest community mothers associations in the country. The CMA remains FREE to join for all families living in Charlestown. We welcome parents (dads too!) who would like to get involved in planning and executing our events and hope you will reach out to us to get involved.
The CMA continues to grow as families come to appreciate that Charlestown is a neighborhood like no other. It is a vibrant, safe and diverse community with great schools, parks, history, activities and neighbors. The CMA is a platform for parents to organize in order to impact positive change in our community. We also work closely with our dedicated elected officials, police and fire departments and benefit greatly from their valued support. The CMA is one of many organizations in Charlestown and we are fortunate to partner with others, such as CSAC, CHAD, park friends, BGCB and others.
Annually, the CMA organizes and sponsors several events for local families including:
· Touch-a-Truck Day
· Patriot’s Day Celebration
· Spring Egg Hunt
· Picnics and Concerts
· New Moms Breakfast
· Expectant Moms Events
· Moms Night Out
· Speaker series
· Park Clean-Up
We provide new toys for our neighborhood parks each year and support amazing young Charlestown women and men with over $15,000 of college and summer camp scholarships. Furthermore, the CMA is proud to support a number of other Charlestown community organizations and events, including the Harvest on Vine Food Pantry, The Charlestown Community Center, Charlestown YMCA, Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center, The Kennedy Center, Unity Day/Rock the Block, The Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, Charlestown Working Theatre, numerous Charlestown Sports, our local schools’ programs and many others.
You may ask how does the CMA get the money for all these great events and sponsorships. We hold one fundraising event each year – our annual GALA. This year the Gala will be held on November 4, 2017 at the EF building in North Point Park. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of our Charlestown friends, neighbors and local businesses, the Gala generates funds crucial to the programs and support we are able to provide the Charlestown community. Please check our website for more information about tickets to our annual Gala, making a donation to our live and silent auctions,and/or becoming a Corporate Sponsor.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the overwhelming commitment of the various CMA Board Members. These women happily devote their time away from their family, personal time and energy to volunteering in our community:
Abby Belge (Vice President), Jenna Carroll (Secretary), Laura Carroll, Katie Darci, Erin Davis, Beth DuBuque (Treasurer), Rebecca Eudy, Shannon Fitzgerald, Marcie Miller, Deborah O’Shea, and Jennifer Rossi (Outgoing President).
Thank you for your continued support of the CMA. It is an honor to serve the Charlestown community. I hope to see you at our annual Gala or at one of our many community events.
President, Charlestown Mothers Association
