New Self Defense Program
March 23-31
The Boston Police Department is offering a 4-evening women’s self defense program free of charge to CMA members. There is still room for a few more participants. The program will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday March 23, Wednesday March 24, Tuesday March 30, and Wednesday March 31, at the Boston Police substation, located at 20 Vine Street, in the 2nd floor conference room. It is not required that you attend all four sessions; however, the more you put into this program, the more you will get out of it. Participants should dress in workout clothing, i.e., sweatpants, t-shirts, sneakers, and no jewelry.
Program details are as follows: Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.) is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. This system begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance while progressing on the basics of hands-on defense training. It is not a martial arts program, but does offer women instruction on physical self-defense.

Haiti relief effort
From CMA member Nancy Wovers Cadene: over the past several years, our business, French Merchants, has participated in the annual Marché de Noel at the French Library in Boston. We have come to know a wonderful woman, Anne Anniger, who is director of US operations for Haiti Projects, Inc. (you can read more about her organization at http://www.haitiprojects.org) who does much to help women and their families of this region. We asked her what was the best way to help, and she provided us with information about Partners in Health, which is based in Boston. Executive director Ophelia Dahl (daughter of author Roald Dahl) is a friend of hers. Because this group has an established medical facility in the central plateau region, when the earthquake occurred they remained operable and were able to use their vehicles to bring medications and care down to the city quickly and bring those most in need of care up to their medical center. If you are considering a donation to the Haitian disaster relief, please consider Partners in Health. And pass it along. Thanks - Nancy Wovers Cadène

Warren-Prescott Cares About Haiti
Students at the Warren-Prescott School are helping to raise money for Boston based Partners in Health, who has been on the ground in Haiti over the past 20 years and were one of the first responders to earthquake victims. (You can read more about Partners in Health and updates about what they are doing in Haiti at http://www.pih.org).
So far a group of sixth graders has already raised money with a bake sale at the Bunker Hill Mall, science teacher Tina Champagne and her 5th grade after school group, the Green Team, are selling bracelets they beaded in the red and blue of the Haitian flag for $2 and students will pay $1 to wear a red or blue T-shirt instead of their normal uniform shirt in a demonstration of solidarity. Students have been encouraged to give up a treat or a movie and make a donation instead, take on an extra chore to earn money or find creative ways to raise funds within a classroom or a group of friends.
"The response to the terrible disaster in Haiti by the students, parents and staff of the Warren-Prescott is nothing short of outstanding," said Dr. Domenic Amara, the school's principal. "They are setting an example for everyone who wants to help."
If you would like to support the Haitian relief effort through the work of the Warren-Prescott students call 617-242-3546 or stop by the school. Checks can be made payable to the Warren-Prescott Foundation at 50 School Street, Charlestown, who will then turn over all funds raised to Partners in Health. |
