CMA Board Writes Letter to MBTA opposing cuts
Letter may be seen on CMA bulletin board
The CMA Board has issued a letter to Mr. Richard Davey, MBTA regarding our stance on the the recently proposed MBTA service cuts. We all feel that eliminating the ferry service and/or the 92 bus line would be a disservice to our community. Please take the time to read the letter and feel free to send your own comments regarding this issue to the MBTA. Please go to the bulletin board to view letter

BPS School Registration Has Begun!

Thinking about any of the Boston public schools for your child? Don't miss the registration period. Registration is required for any child new to BPS, whether they are just starting in kindergarten or are further along in their education and transferring from another school district or private/parochial school. There are four rounds of registration, and the first round starts January 3 and runs through February 3, but you must register during the specific window assigned to you (based on your child's entering grade level and your last name). For more information, visit http://www.bostonpublicschools.org/.

We have also published in the bulletin boards a very helpful and thorough BPS School registration and information outline prepared by CMA member Jennifer Herlihy.

CMA Community Clothing Sale
Do you want to help out?
The Charlestown Mothers Association is organizing the largest clothing sale of its kind in the neighborhood in early March. We are looking for women who would like to take on an active role working with local organizations from schools to churches to collect items for this clothing sale. All donations will be tax deductible. Clothing will be sold at below bargain-basement prices. We need volunteers who would like to help us collect, sort, advertise and set up for the event. Meet some wonderful mothers! Our goal is to make this an affordable event for everyone in the community and it's also a very "Green" activity that helps the environment (in addition to our wallets). Items we are collecting: Baby, Kids, Adult Clothing, Coats, Shoes, Boots (Sports shoes included) and accessories -(ie. handbags, backpacks). We ask that all donations be in good condition (you would buy) and laundered. Please start cleaning out your closets and help make this event a huge success for the neighborhood! Email Rebecca Love at rebeclove@hotmail.com if you would like to get involved and if you have a specific organization you would like to work with. Thank you!

Thank you to our sponsors!

Please take a moment to read through our list of very generous business, individual and political donors! We are fortunate to have the support of many local business owners as well as the broader community. Our success would not be possible without their support.

CMA Outreach, Donations and Activities 2010-2011
Review of What the CMA has done this past year
The Charlestown Mothers Association has had a busy year with outreach, donations and activities that have helped to strengthen the Charelstown Community for families. Here is a summary of the what we have done since our Fundraiser in October 2010.

· College Scholarships: In 2011, we were able to expand our college scholarships, awarding 5 scholarships totaling $6,000. Erin McLaughlin received $2,500 toward her studies at Bunker Hill Community College, while Caitlin Kelly, Sijing Lei, and Taylor Mahoney all received $1,000. Leisa Loan was our third place recipient and was awarded $500. They are an impressive, hardworking group of young women.

· Camp Scholarships: $3,550 was allocated to camp scholarships this year. Several scholarships were made available to campers through the Charlestown Community Center and local Girl Scout Troops. The CMA also continued its tradition of sponsoring Charlestown campers at Agassiz Village, an overnight camp in Poland, Maine. Eight children residing in Charlestown attended camp for one week through our support.

· Support of Community Organizations and Outreach: The CMA partners with many other wonderful organizations in Charlestown that work to improve the lives of the community. With over $9,000 given in donations, the CMA has supported organizations including Harvest on Vine, The Charlestown Community Center, Special Townies, The Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center, Little League, Rookie League, Youth Football and Cheerleading, The Kennedy Center, Boston Inner City Children’s Choir, CHAD, The Boys and Girls Club, the Charlestown Working Theater and others. We also use our extensive email list to help raise awareness for local needs as well as using it to keep our members informed of local happenings and issues pertinent to Charlestown families.

· Parks/Library: CMA representatives work tirelessly to make sure the City improves our parks/playgrounds and libraries by attending Community Meetings and communicating Charlestown’s needs to local politicians. The CMA spent over $700 this year on new toys located at Doherty Park, Looney Park and the Navy Yard Park for all children to enjoy. The CMA was also instrumental in getting the City to hire our wonderful new children’s librarian.

· Community Events: The Charlestown Mothers Association hosts over 35 events per year including the Spring Egg Hunt, Patriots Day Parade, Spring Shopping Night, Halloween, Touch a Truck Day, Meet the Schools, Trip To Spectacle Island, Annual Holiday Party, Annual CMA Gala, Monthly New Moms Breakfasts and Monthly Moms Nights Out, in addition to Speakers Series and joint activities with community partners.

The CMA Board is a working board of 100% volunteer moms – all of whom lead very busy lives! All of our events could not take place without the help and dedication of our membership and friends of the community.

In short, the Charlestown Mothers Association is a true community-based organization. With over 1,000 families in our membership, all located within the one square mile of Charlestown, we are one of the largest community mothers associations in the country! Everyday we support families in their efforts to stay and raise their families in the City of Boston.
